A Message from the Superintendent

I am pleased to present to you the Perth Amboy Public Schools calendar for 2007-2008. Please use this calendar as a reference for important dates that occur during the year and enjoy the pictures of your children along with the artistry created by your children that appear throughout this publication. This summer, the Administrative and support staff has spent considerable time planning for the upcoming year. Changes have been made in staffing, program and to our physical plant so that we may provide our students with the finest educational experience. Additionally, we have continued to provide Professional Development Workshops and training to our teaching staff that reflects the innovations that we have infused into the instructional process. The members of our Board of Education are committed to public education in Perth Amboy and the important role it plays in the development of our children. Following the Policies of the Board, our employees are dedicated to our students, no matter what their particular role might be.

This year will be a combination of change, modification and continuance. New programs and strategies will replace those deemed to be ineffective; promising programs will be modified to increase their effectiveness; and programs that have been successful will continue, and perhaps be expanded to additional grades. We do not accept labels put upon us by others which are critical and counter-productive. Rather, we would like to heighten our progress and our successes by focusing on the ability of our students who, despite cultural and economic challenges, continue to demonstrate their ability to achieve.

I believe the organization of the Perth Amboy Public Schools is structured for success. Beginning with a full-day Pre-School Program for 3 and 4-year olds, which progresses to a full-day Kindergarten, our students are taught the fundamentals which become the basis for future learning. Our elementary schools, which are second to none in their modern construction, offer concentrated programs in Reading, Writing and Math; the three subject areas which need to be emphasized in order to prepare students for the diverse range of subjects we offer in later years. Our middle schools, now reorganized into neighborhood schools, are receiving the focus of attention of our most accomplished educators in order to improve student performance so that they can be fully prepared for the rigors of Perth Amboy High School. At the High School we continue to see students distinguish themselves as scholars, athletes, musicians, actors and vocalists. Many of our High School graduates attend some of the most prestigious colleges in the country while others pursue rewarding experiences in military service or business.

Our success continues to depend on the involvement and support of our parents. At the outset of the school year during the month of September, all of our schools will be scheduling their respective “Back-to-School Nights”. This provides parents an opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and Principal. Please take advantage of this opportunity and visit our schools which will hold activities for parents throughout the coming school year. We ask all of our parents to join us in a collaborative effort to help every child in the district achieve to the best of their ability. The importance of education cannot be taken for granted. It is the key to success in today’s society. We request our parents to echo that message to their children throughout the coming year.

Very truly yours,

John M. Rodecker
Superintendent of Schools
