OUR WORK: Our ELA period consists of 90 minute blocks and social studies consist of 45 min periods. We will be working with different core novels this year (in which each child will receive a copy of the book to take home.) We will also be working with reading stations where we address different 5th grade skills through guided reading/ stations book clubs etc. Writer’s Workshop will focus on different types of grade five writing that will be reviewed and analyzed through intense learning with partners, groups and teacher’s guidance. Social Studies will consist of learning through note taking, acting out and unique projects. Google Classroom will also be used throughout the year. Your students will join during class if you would like to see progression on essays and class work they will have access through their Google account on any computer.
HOMEWORK: We will have homework Mon-Thurs. weekly. Many times it will consist of reading our independent novels, following assigned chapters. We will be identifying a strategy and writing about it as we discover it in our reading to then be discussed with our classmates for further review the next day. PLEASE make sure students are reading and up to date on independent novels since we will have class discussions on specific pages assigned for homework.
PARENTS WELCOMED IN: We will have classroom essay celebrations where parents will be invited to come in and hear their students share their published pieces once a marking period. Permission slips will be sent out prior to the approaching event.
BEHAVIOR POLICY: Students will be expected to follow rules as discussed and created together in the beginning of the school year. If a student is having difficulties following these rules I will email parents/guardians notifying them of child’s actions. It is important all parents complete a information form for this reason.
DETENTION: Any student worthy of detention will be asked to stay after school for 15 mins. Any further time extension parents will be contacted and notified 24 hours prior.
CELL PHONES/TECH.: Cell phones/Tech is prohibited during class. If a child needs to be contacted please email me or call the school. If a child has a cell phone out during class without permission, the teacher will remove the cell phone from the child and child will not receive it back until the end of the day. Habitual offenders may be asked to have parents come in and pick up from an administrator.
BULLDOGS (ORANGE): WE ARE THE BULLDOGS! McGinnis School has adopted a positive behavior program in which we have divided our school into competing houses. These houses compete by hosting events raising funds for their designated house charities. We also compete with other houses based on participation in events, receiving the most dog tags for behavior, attendance rates etc. There will be different dates where students will be allowed to wear orange to school since this is our house color.
Please sign and return the bottom portion so I am aware you have reviewed all class information and policies in place.
