"Look with thine ears"
The Reading Specialists and Reading Interventionists at S.E. Shull Middle School, grades 5,6,7, & 8, use the most current school data and other assessments to organize students into small groups to help improve reading comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, decoding skills, fluency, and test scores.
This year we are very excited about the new Literacy Lab at Shull. Current and past research shows the foundation of reading is vocabulary. The Literacy Lab uses a variety of techniques and strategies, including a multi-sensory approach, to help students acquire the skills necessary to achieve grade-level scores in reading. To this end, Reading Specialists at Shull were Orton Gillingham trained over the summer; Orton Gillingham is a phonics-based program emphasizing word acquisition through pattern recognition, decoding, and other "self-correcting" reading skills. Furthermore, Literacy Lab students are routinely evaluated throughout the school year for evidence of improvement in reading and word recognition. Please visit the Lab anytime!
