The Communications Academy is a high school program of study in which a cohort of students stay together in the same program for three years. The curriculum organizes instruction in academic subject areas focused around the Communications industry. The Academy enables students to fulfill prerequisites for college entrance while acquiring work field related knowledge and skill sets.
In order to create the most robust Academy for our High School, the Communications Academy was developed following the National Standards of Practice from the National Career Academy Coalition and consulted with experts in the field of Communications. Dr. Rodney Benson, the Department Chair and Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University assisted with the development of the curriculum, and has worked with staff to deliver a rigorous and engaging course of study.
In order to deliver a world-class curriculum, the district invested heavily in updating the facilities. The classrooms were updated with the latest technology, a new Television and Film studio was built, the Media Center was renovated, a virtual reality lab was created, and even the print shop was updated to include a 3-D printer and give students access to graphic media creation tools.
“The first cohort of over one-hundred students will have access to the most cutting edge materials and coursework that will prepare them for a competitive, 21st century workforce,” stated Mrs. Daisy Rodriguez, Principal of Perth Amboy High School.
Perth Amboy High School will continue to roll out a total of four theme-based academies each school year. The academies will be fully functional at the main campus on Eagle Ave. and will be transferred over to the new Perth Amboy High School once it is completed by the New Jersey School Development Authority.
