    Supermarket Study

During the months of October and November, our class did a study on the "Supermarket".

In this study, students learned about: who works/visits a supermarket, some of the tools/equipment used in a supermarket, the different sections of the supermarket, as well as the food/items that are sold in a supermarket.

Here are some of the Supermarket study activities that we did in our classroom centers:

In the Blocks Center, students build different supermarkets using blocks and food/item boxes.

Some of the "supermarkets" that they built included: Wegman's, Costco, Walmart, and Ideal Supermarket.

In the Toys and Games Center, students were: creating/copying fruit patterns, counting strawberries into baskets, and playing a supermarket uppercase/lowercase alphabet letter matching game.

      .  .  .

In the Art Area, students created: a supermarket food mural, supermarket flyer collages, and supermarket foods made from model magic.

In the Discovery Center, students predicted which fruit/vegetable was the heaviest and then used a balance scale to see if their prediction was correct.

In the Library Area, we listened to and retold stories related to supermarket/food such as: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Lunch, Feast for 10, and The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear.

In the Dramatic Play Center, students first created a supermarket sign.

                                      .  .

Then, students wrote out a shopping list of the food/items they needed to buy at the supermarket.

Lastly, students role played as either a cashier, store clerk, or customer buying food/items at our Cruz Supermarket.

We celebrated the end of our Supermarket study with an Ice cream Party.

We made a shopping list of the things that we needed to buy for the Ice Cream Party and then we each got to make and eat our very own ice cream!
