Who is James J. Flynn?
Our school was named in honor of James J. Flynn Jr.
James J. Flynn Jr. was born in Perth Amboy in 1910. Mr. Flynn joined his father’s business, Flynn and Sons Funeral Home, in 1931 and took over as manager of the family business in 1933. Mr. Flynn was elected as the mayor of Perth Amboy from 1950 to 1970, the city’s only five-term mayor. Mr. Flynn was also a funeral director and was elected Middlesex County Coroner in 1938. He also served as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1956, 1960, 1964, and 1968. Mr. Flynn was a former member and vice chairperson of the New Jersey Lottery Commission and a past director of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors. He also served as past president of the Middlesex and Somerset County Funeral Directors Association.
Mr. Flynn was married to his wife Estelle and had three sons, Dr. James J. Flynn III of Colts Neck, NJ, and Dennis and Brendan Flynn of Edison, NJ. Mr. Flynn had eight grandchildren. He died in March 1983; he was 72 at the time of his death.
