Student Opt Out Procedures
According to N.J.S.A. 18A:35-4.7 “The NJDOE recognizes and respects that some families prefer to have these conversations privately. Any child whose parent or guardian presents to the school a signed statement that any part of instruction in health, family life education, or sex education is in conflict with his or her conscience or sincerely held moral or religious beliefs shall be excused from that portion of the course. Parents and guardians seeking to exercise this option should contact their local school principal directly.”
If a parent would like to opt their child out of receiving the lessons, they must complete and sign the Perth Amboy Public Schools “Department of Health and Physical Education Family Life/Sex Education Opt Out Form” located on each school’s website. To locate this form, click “Departments” on the top ribbon bar and then click on “Health and Physical Education” where you can download and complete the form. The form must be returned to the building principal. To download the opt-out request form, please click below as it applies to your child’s child’s grade level;

Physical EducationDear Student and Parent/Guardian:Physical Education is mandated by the State of New Jersey. Therefore, all students must participate in Physical Education classes unless they are excused by a medical doctor. Throughout the year we will emphasize the importance of physical fitness and daily exercise. We will achieve this goal by engaging the students in regular exercise and we will measure their fitness level through a standardized Physical Fitness Test.The students will practice good hygiene by changing their clothes for physical education.All types of jewelry are prohibited. This includes post and hoops earrings, visible body piercings, necklaces, string and rubber bracelets and watches.Throughout the school year, students walk to Waters Stadium, where there is a six lane track and turf field for activities.Health Education, which is also mandated, contains a sub-unit entitled "Family Life". The Family Life Program, 1) develops and understanding of interpersonal relationships, sexuality and reproduction, 2) provides the opportunity for pupils to acquire knowledge to develop responsible behavior and, 3) encourages positive health practices for themselves and their families, thereby contributing to the enrichment of the community.The district's' Family Life Education unit is taught with lessons that are appropriate to age, growth, development and maturity of the pupils. It includes factual information on emerging health and social issues.The Family Life Curriculum was originally reviewed through an advisory committee of educators, parents, and other community members.Any parent or guardian of a pupil enrolled in the Perth Amboy Public Schools may review a copy of the curriculum upon request.If after reviewing the Family Life Program Curriculum you feel any portion is in conflict with your moral or religious beliefs, you may have your child excused from that portion of the curriculum by submitting a letter in writing to the building principal.Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's Health teacher.Sincerely,The SE Shull School Health & Physical Education Department732-376-6060 Men's Office x26-446 Women's Office x26-445How to help your child's mental health during COVID19:
