Dear Samuel E. Shull Middle School Community,

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy!

I write to you as the new principal of Shull --- a place that feels like “home” for me.  Out of my twenty years serving our Perth Amboy community, eight of those years have been here at Shull as both a language arts teacher and vice principal. I have also been a district curriculum supervisor and, most recently, principal of Anthony V. Ceres Elementary School since 2017.  In reflecting upon my own educational experiences as both a student and a professional, I believe that educators are charged with the goals of setting high expectations for ourselves, our students, and colleagues, while establishing strong respect and rapport with each stakeholder.  As a school community, it’s high expectations for learning and strong relationships that help to make a school successful.

During my first year as Shull’s principal, I will be working with our leadership team to increase communication with our families and community partners, as well as beginning the work of establishing a shared vision of educational excellence for our middle school students.  By working together, we will set our students on the path towards readiness for high school as well as a love of learning.  We encourage our parents and families to become active contributors to our school in various ways, including membership in our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), attendance at conference nights, educational workshops, as well as social events and activities.  Please expect future communications about ways in which you can become involved as we move forward.

If we can be of assistance to either you or your family, please feel free to contact me at 732.376.6060 or via email at derrkyriacou@paps.net.

    Yours in Education,

    Derrick C. Kyriacou
    Principal

My philosophy of education is grounded in the belief that all children possess an untapped font of potential. In order for them to fully untap, explore, and embrace their distinct gifts, it takes a collective effort to ensure they have the support and conditions to thrive. I became an educator in my own community because I wanted to be part of the conditions that could promote growth, inspire progress, and empower and build the children of Perth Amboy. Becoming a school leader meant having the honor to be part of--and shape--the system that creates the conditions under which our students can grow into the thoughtful, confident, and empowered individuals they are meant to be.

Samuel E. Shull Middle School has always been a very special place for me and I am thrilled to return as a vice principal. I have served the Perth Amboy community as an educator for over fifteen years. Twelve of those years have been dedicated to the Shull students, families, and staff. I look forward to working alongside the students, the families, and the staff to build a school community that reflects the full measure of the outstanding individuals who walk these hallways each and every day.

My passion is education. I come from a family of educators, and I strive to move students forward to reach their highest potential. I enjoy challenges, working with colleagues to complete given tasks, and I became an educational leader to help students realize all they can accomplish in the world today.  I am excited about being a school leader at Samuel E. Shull Middle School and interacting with and motivating all students and staff. I truly enjoy working with students at these grade levels -- as I was a middle school teacher for twenty years. The Perth Amboy school community can expect me to be a positive and energetic leader every day at Shull School!
