Welcome to Samuel E. Shull Middle School
At Samuel E. Shull Middle School, we are proud to serve over 950 students in grades 6 through 8, fostering a dynamic and supportive environment where every learner is empowered to reach their full potential. Our school is built on a strong foundation of academic excellence, character development, and community connection.
Our Mission and Vision
We are committed to proactively ensuring that all students become life-long learners who achieve academic success, build strong character, and demonstrate positive behavior. Our vision is rooted in a promise: that every student will learn, grow, and thrive in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment.
Academics and Instruction
Shull offers a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum, grounded in core subjects including Language Arts, Mathematics, Algebra, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education, and Health. Students can also explore their passions through a diverse range of elective courses such as Technology Education, Spanish, Theater Arts, Art, TV Production, Chorus, and Instrumental Music.
Instruction at Shull is collaborative and engaging, designed to meet the needs of all learners. Our instructional staff participates in regular professional learning communities (PLCs) and ongoing professional development to ensure high-quality teaching and student outcomes.
Student Support Services
Our School Support Team (SST) works collaboratively to address student attendance, academic needs, and behavioral challenges. We are proud to offer a robust network of support personnel including school counselors, a Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC), Attendance Officer, Home School Liaison, Child Study Team, and a school psychologist dedicated to Tier 3 interventions. We also partner with Rutgers Behavioral Health to provide on-site clinical services to selected students.
Our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program recognizes students for excellence in character and behavior, promoting a positive school climate where all students feel valued and motivated.
Health and Wellness
We believe that social-emotional learning is just as important as academic achievement. Through the support of our counselors and Child Study Team, students develop critical social-emotional skills that help them navigate challenges and build meaningful relationships. Health and wellness are core components of our school culture.
Before and After School Programs
Through programs like SOAR and All In Reading, we offer before and after school support to help all students meet academic standards. Additional tutoring services and enrichment opportunities in subjects like Mathematics further enhance learning and growth beyond the classroom.
Clubs, Activities, and the Arts
Student life at Shull is vibrant and full of opportunities. Our students participate in a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities, including the Yearbook, TV Production, Chess, Newsletter, Student Council, and our Spring Musical. These programs allow students to connect, create, and contribute to our school community in meaningful ways.
We also celebrate student achievements through events like our annual Film Festival, and we are proud of our National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) members who model academic excellence and leadership.
Athletics and Physical Education
Shull Middle School proudly offers a competitive and inclusive athletic program with sports such as Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, Track and Field, and Wrestling. As part of the Perth Amboy Middle School Athletics and the Middlesex County Conference, our athletes follow NJSIAA regulations and embody the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance.
Technology and Innovation
With the support of the Office of Curriculum & Instruction, we continuously integrate cutting-edge technology into classrooms and school operations. Our Multi-Media Center, complete with a technology lab and TV production studio, allows students to explore digital literacy and STEM subjects. Classrooms are equipped with Promethean Boards for interactive lessons, and a newly upgraded sound system in our Multi-Purpose Room enhances school events and presentations.
Safe, Secure, and Student-Centered
Student safety is our top priority. We maintain a secure learning environment through the presence of security personnel, enhanced police collaboration, upgraded infrastructure, a weapons detection system, and comprehensive emergency preparedness protocols.
Family and Community Engagement
At Shull, we believe that family engagement is vital to student success. We foster strong connections through parent nights, weekly updates from our principal, and consistent communication via our website and messaging systems. Our active Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) offers opportunities for families and staff to work together to support students.
A Community of Excellence
Samuel E. Shull Middle School is more than a school—it's a community where students are inspired, supported, and celebrated. With our outstanding educators, engaging programs, and a shared commitment to student success, we are proud to be shaping the future, one student at a time.
