Mr. Shephard

My name is Michael Shephard. I teach Auto Shop 1 and Advanced Auto Shop here at PAHS.

Here is a little about me.

I have been teaching in the  Perth Amboy Public School District since 2021

I have been teaching Automotive Technology since 2009

I have over 35 years experience as a Master Certified Automotive Technician.

I am ASE master certified and a General Motors World Class Master Technician

In 2020 I won second place in the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for teaching excellence

Auto Shop 1 is a course designed to introduce students to the world of automotive repair and maintenance. If you think you may want to work in a repair shop, auto parts store, salvage yard, car or truck dealership, or think you may own a car or truck some day, you might find this course helpful, interesting and fun! We will learn about maintaining vehicles, shop safety, brake repairs, tire replacements and fixing those pesky TPMS lights! And we work on a LOT of cars here. You will get dirty but we can provide you with a workshop coat while you are here.

Advanced Auto Shop is a course designed to dive deeper into the automotive career and repair world. We will learn about automotive electricity/electronics, engines, and engine performance. You will have a chance to use a professional level scan tool to extract Diagnostic Trouble Codes, pull Data and diagnose car faults related to the brakes, engine, transmission, steering, or any connected system (Hint: They are all connected!) The main focus for second year students is to seek a career in the industry. I will introduce you to the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship with the IAM/CREST labor union in conjunction with the NJ Department Of Labor's Youth Transition To Work program. An exciting program that, if you are accepted, provides you with free Automotive Technology classes at Union County College for 4 years, helps you find a job, gives you membership in a union with great benefits, and all while you are getting paid!

I firmly believe that a career in automotive should be accessible for any student and I work diligently to make sure that all of my students feel supported if they want to explore this as a career. I can train you, advise you, guide you, and point you in the right direction, but you have to walk the walk.
