Cooking Club: Advised by Amanda Bonnell
Cooking Club is a diverse and vibrant community of foodies come together to explore familiar and unfamiliar cuisines around the world. Learn how to cook amazing foods and develop professional culinary skills. The club welcomes all levels of cooks to join and experience the vast world of culinary arts in a positive, warm and safe environment because nothing brings individuals together and says comfort more than food.
What we have accomplished so far.
2021-2022 During each club session, the students are given and shown a different recipe. This year, each month was given a theme and recipes coincided with that theme. Throughout the sessions, students worked hard creating new recipes and achieving a level of understanding of culinary skills. The months of May and June were given a theme of “party” as we, alongside many other clubs, helped cater for end of the year parties and the students were able to show off their new skills to their peers.

This year was the second of holding the cooking club as an after-school program. I was more than happy to hold the club after school but knew entry into the club would need to be based on applications. After the first preliminary interest meeting, I received over 250 applications to the club! In going through the applications, I decided that splitting two monthly sessions into two groups would be what was best to accommodate more students, bringing the final count of accepted students to 50

Each month we hold a short meeting or Google Classroom poll in regard to the theme of the month. Choosing the theme together allowed the class and me to work together in choosing new and exciting content for the club and what recipes we would learn.

Some of the highlights of this year are as follows: Combined with the Key Club and Panther life program, a tea party was held for women in history week. Cooking Club co-hosted many events and sold concessions (events listed above). We started our Masterclass fundraiser and held two sessions attended by over 25 students and faculty (each session). Members that were also Tri-M members were able to cook something with my supervision to bring to their annual end of the year dinner and show off to their peers. Members were also responsible for setting up the event and practicing their catering skills.

This year, the club opened to Freshman Academy. As having students in the club for four consecutive years, we will be able to achieve culinary expertise and knowledge. I accepted 9 freshman members.

The club also has two sets of leadership; PR, Secretary, Treasurer & Vice president, both one set from the senior class and one set from the junior class.

We are looking forward to the possibility of trips, one to USFoods in Perth Amboy where the students will get a tour of the warehouse and see professional chefs cook in the test kitchen and sample foods, and a trip to the Institute of Culinary Education. I am also working on inviting guest chefs in to instruct the students.

A cookbook was created for the culinary classes and the club.
This club along with my classes have worked beautifully simultaneously, and it has given me so much joy and excitement in my teaching career. I look forward to a bountiful future with this club.
