Course Description:
Students will build upon the foundation they acquired in previous English courses to conduct and cite research. Each subsequent unit in this curriculum requires students to become proficient users of these skills in order to avoid plagiarism. As sophomores, students will research a current issue of debate or controversy. Students will engage in the research process and develop the critical-thinking skills to discern facts from opinion and to determine the credibility of sources. Students will define and develop thesis writing and develop a research process based on a thesis. The citation method students will use is the American Psychological Association (APA) format of author-date-page citation. Students will use the most current technology for citation, Microsoft Word’s “References” tab for creating in-text citations and Works Cited pages. Students will submit original work in this unit, and all subsequent units, to Turnitin.com, a plagiarism detection website.
