Mr. Donald Reid

Hello! My name is Donald Reid, and I am thrilled to be the Perth Amboy Boys Basketball Coach. Currently, I am an ICR Teacher at Perth Amboy High School and have worked in the district for over 15 years.

My passion for basketball has been growing since I was a child. I played AAU travel basketball as well as played on the varsity team during high school at Cardinal McCarrick from 2002-2005. In 2002-2003, we won our County Championship as well as winning the State Parochial B South Section in 2003 and 2005.

After high school, I continued my education at Montclair State University, where I also played basketball, but had to stop due to an injury. I did not allow this hurdle to end my career. I began volunteering as a coach at Cardinal McCarrick in 2008 and became the Varsity Assistant coach here in Perth Amboy in 2014.

I then started along the path of Head Coach. I coached at the Academy for Urban Leadership Charter School in Perth Amboy from 2017 to 2020. I led the AUL Varsity team through the Regular Season and Post-Season Championships with an overall record of 24-5. Also, I coached two players named to the First Team All-League and All-Tournament, as well as the Post-Season Tournament Most Valuable Player. In 2019-2020, I was named the New Jersey Charter School Athletic League Coach of the Year.

In 2021-2022, I coached the Varsity Basketball team at Perth Amboy Vocational Technical School, but when the opportunity came to me to come back to Perth Amboy High School, a district that I work at and have a true passion for, it was not something that I would turn down. I spend most of my spare time working with players in the district outside of school, providing training opportunities and coaching advice.

As a basketball coach and enthusiast, my philosophy is that this sport gives students a way to show their talents while being a role model for those aspiring to be in their athletic position. I have a vision for the Perth Amboy Basketball Program, and it starts with the younger student athletes all the way through High School. I want to create a basketball culture that the community can believe in and invest in their children. I encourage all student athletes to continue their education after high school in college. Whether for sports or academics, I want to ensure they receive a successful education where they can set themselves up for life after schooling.
