    In this course, students will engage with complex texts across a variety of genres to deepen their understanding of language, rhetoric, and composition. Expectations include:

    • Active Participation: Come prepared to discuss, analyze, and reflect on challenging texts. Collaboration and thoughtful conversation are essential.

    • Critical Reading: Be ready to read a range of fiction and nonfiction texts closely and critically, identifying rhetorical strategies and thematic elements.

    • Writing Development: Students will compose analytical, argumentative, and personal pieces with an emphasis on clarity, structure, and style. Revision and peer feedback are integral parts of the process.

    • Timed Writing & Exam Prep: Regular practice in timed writing and rhetorical analysis to build skills for college-level writing and standardized assessments.

    • Independence & Responsibility: Manage long-term assignments, meet deadlines, and take initiative in your learning. This course is designed to prepare students for the expectations of college and beyond.

    Course Expectations:

    This course introduces students to the principles of journalism, news writing, and media ethics. Expectations include:

    • Accuracy & Integrity: Students are expected to report truthfully and ethically, fact-checking all work and giving credit to sources.

    • Engaged Reporting: Participation in interviews, investigations, and coverage of real school or community events is required.

    • Strong Writing Skills: Produce news articles, editorials, features, and multimedia content with attention to structure, clarity, and audience.

    • Collaboration: Work as part of a newsroom team. Respect deadlines, provide constructive feedback, and support peers in producing high-quality content.

    • Media Literacy: Analyze current events, evaluate sources, and understand how media shapes public perception and discourse.

Using Savvas myPerspectives and the Savvas Grammar Workbook, students will engage with diverse texts and writing styles that challenge their thinking and prepare them for college and career readiness.

      ✍️ Writing & Composition

      • Write in multiple modes: argumentative, analytical, narrative, and expository.

      • Emphasis on clear thesis development, logical organization, and voice.

      • Engage in peer review and revision as part of the writing process.

      🧠 Vocabulary Acquisition

      • Weekly vocabulary activities aligned with reading selections to build academic and literary vocabulary.

      • Strategies include context clues, word roots and affixes, and usage in writing and speaking.

      • 15 minutes of independent reading, three times per week is required.

      • Students may select their own texts, with teacher approval, to build fluency, stamina, and personal engagement with reading.
